On 21 February 2019, the European Commission received a notification of a proposed concentration, pursuant to Article 3(1)(b) of Council Regulation (EC) No 139/2004, which involves the acquisition by KDDI Corporation (KDDI) of joint control with Mitsubishi UFJ Securities Holdings Co. Ltd., (Mitsubishi Securities) over Kabu.com Securities Co., Ltd. (Kabu.com).
The main business activities of the parties are as follows:
• KDDI is a telecommunications services company, which provides a range of services, including mobile phone services, fixed-line communication, information technologies (such as data centres), e-commerce, energy, and financial services.
• Mitsubishi Securities is a subsidiary of Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group, Inc., which operates globally and provides a full range of banking services. Depending on the geographical region, these include retail, corporate, and investment banking services, as well as asset management and sales and trading services.
• Kabu.com is a securities company that mainly provides online brokerage services to customers located in Japan and computer systems, programs, and software for online securities transactions.
